Another WTF....

Doo Da Doo Da Doo....

We woke up with much time to spare Thanksgiving morning.... kids were being good, eating breakfast and coloring. I was still in PJ's, sipping my morning coffee, planning the showers ahead.... 3 kids and 2 adults needed showers to start the day.

"John, could you put my gray pants in the dryer for me?"

"Sure babe."
I go upstairs, still sipping my coffee, a few minutes go by...
"DANA!!!!!!!!!!"

Huh?

"DANA!!!! GET DOWN TO THE F@%!(*& BASEMENT!!!!!"

Wtf??

As I'm still casually strolling downstairs, coffee still in hand, I hear cussing in the basement.... hmm... maybe I should walk a tad faster....

Coming into the basement: (Picture if you will....)

*Water on the basement floor, John still out of sight. As I come around to the laundry corner, I arrive just in time to see John trying to tighten the drainage valve on the water heater... and five seconds later, the valve goes flying off the tank and hot water is flowing like a faucet at full strength out onto the floor*
I stood there for a minute and ..... WTF? It's Thanksgiving morning and I just woke up less then an hour ago... how the hell did this day go so terribly wrong in LESS THEN ONE HOUR?!?!?! And why am I just standing here watching all this water cascade around my feet?!?!?

Now mind you, neither of us know a flippin' thing about plumbing but together we jump into action! Basement drain clear of debris? CHECK. Water draining downward? CHECK. Where the fuck is the shut of valve? Found it. CHECK. Gas line? Found that one too. CHECK. Why is there still water leaking from the tank??? We turned it off right? Right. Maybe the tank is just still draining? Well, we'll just wait and see....

Pack the kids up. CHECK. Pack our clothes, bathroom toiletries, shoes, kids pajama's and soap. CHECK. Game plan: John and I will shower at his parents before turkey lunch. Then off to Grandpa J's where we will relax. Then to my in-laws where the kids will shower before coming home. (Seriously, this is how my thought process works in crisis! Lots of CHECKS.....)

Couple little side notes to this little thanksgiving scenario:

*Turns out the water shut off valve is VERY old, like everything else in my house, and it doesn't shut off the water completely. When we came home to check and see if the tank was done draining we realized that we had to shut off the main valve to the whole house to get the water to stop running.

*And this one was the kicker.... we stopped at Hy-Vee for a baster for his mom.... Hy-Vee is out of basters so John buys a case of pop.... on the way back to the car... the case of pop busts open...

I'm glad I felt the Thanksgiving spirit for awhile.... but honestly, I'm glad that day is over now :-) It was fun while it lasted but it's time to move on.... and fix the damn water heater!

"Stuff" always happens at the most inopportune times ... and you even take pictures of it!

Way to keep us informed!

Lol... those were "after pictures"! That was how wet the floor was a day later :-) Trust me, when I was standing there in the puddle, I didn't even think of grabbing my camera!! :-)
